Philosophy provides the foundation for understanding the field; the field becomes an experience through which philosophical understanding is tested; their intersection takes the form of an exhibition; and the exhibition, in turn, becomes an experience for renewed philosophical reflection.
This course takes Spinoza's Ethics as its central text and understands feeling not as an isolated subjective state, but as a structure emerging through the interaction of body, ideas, relationships, and environment. In the classroom, students develop an adequate understanding of feeling; in three Field Trip X sessions, they observe the thoughts and feelings that arise in actual cultural and artistic settings. Each field session consists of one hour of direct experience and two hours of reflection and presentation. The accumulated understanding and experience are developed through the curatorial process of ART LAB X and presented publicly in the Myeongwon Museum exhibition in November. In Weeks 12–15, students return that exhibition experience to the philosophical problems of Ethics, reflecting on it and bringing the semester's inquiry into synthesis.
